Granlibakken’s 95th Celebration:Tahoe Ski History

Granlibakken was first used as a winter recreation hill in 1922 by Tahoe City locals. In 1926, the Tahoe Tavern, a grand resort just outside of Tahoe City, stayed open for its first winter season. The Tahoe Tavern used Granlibakken, which was then called “Ski Canyon,” as their winter recreation hill—hosting jumping exhibitions, dog sledding races, and entertaining guests with a toboggan slide built by lumber and mining magnate D.L. Bliss. In 1947, Kjell “Rusty” Rustad built a 450 ft. rope tow to the top of the hill and christened the area “Granlibakken,” which means “hill sheltered by fir trees” in Norwegian.

To celebrate 95 years of operation, Granlibakken Tahoe is offering 25% off room rates and 5 months of giveaways-from Granlibakken Day Spa treatments to sledding parties. Granlibakken will also celebrate its status as one of California’s oldest continuously operated ski resorts with a 95th anniversary party at the ski and sled hill. Click here for more information.
